LLM Slop Kiddies Is A Phrase Now And They’ve Done Serious Harm To The PS5 Linux Project
Drama And Disappointment For GTA 6 On PS5 Linux
It was just a few short months ago when a developer by the name of Andy Nguyen figured out how to convince PS5 hardware to run on Linux. He managed to get all the bells and whistles to behave, as a demonstration he showed off how to get GTA V Enhanced with Ray Tracing enabled running on a modified PS5. Unfortunately as of today there is lots of drama and no more PS5 Linux project.
The trick to getting Linux running was an unpatched hypervisor bug present on firmware versions 3.00 through 7.61. His original intention was to keep this bug secret until the launch of GTA 6 so that people could buy a legal copy of the game and enjoy it on a Linux powered PS5. Unfortunately, as he describes it, LLM “Slop kiddies found the only hypervisor bug left, which I had also found a while ago, and decided to report to Sony.” It was quickly patched and Sony will ensure that patch is installed on a PS5 in order for GTA 6 to work.
It seems that Andy discovered the bug, was contacted by a second person who also discovered it and they agreed not to disclose anything publicly until after GTA 6 was released. Then a third unaffiliated party used an LLM to examine the PS6, found this bug and immediately disclosed it. Seeing as how this rendered all Andy’s work invalid, and as there is no guarantee some LLM slop kiddy won’t immediately spill the beans on any newly discovered vulnerabilities which would let a Linux powered PS5 play new games in the future, he has bailed on the project.
The project does still exist if you want to work on it, but the issue that drove Andy away will still be waiting to ruin your efforts.
