Frame gen is coming to PSSR “at some point” says Mark Cerny, but “no more releases planned” this year

PSSR is Sony’s equivalent to upscaling technology common in PC gaming, such as Nvidia’s DLSS, AMD’s FSR, and Intel’s XeSS tools. But all three of those feature something that PSSR currently doesn’t – frame generation. Sony teamed up with AMD to co-develop PSSR for the PS5 Pro, which recently enjoyed an “upgraded PSSR” version, unofficially referred to as PSSR 2.

Nvidia has been the one to push frame gen as far as possible, especially with its new 6x Dynamic Frame Generation coming at the end of March. AMD and Intel lag behind, especially with the former being more reserved about the technology, still only offering ‘single’ frame generation (it’s still called 2x as one rendered frame is assisted by one AI-generated frame).

In a recent interview with Digital Foundry, PS5 architect Mark Cerny discussed the ongoing development of PSSR 2, sneaking in a mention of frame generation towards the end. AMD will be upgrading to multi-frame gen with its upcoming FSR Diamond, though it remains to be seen if this functionality will be ready to go on the PlayStation 5 Pro.

We should also point out that Cerny fails to mention any specific console. PSSR is currently exclusive to the PlayStation 5 Pro, and there’s no reason to suggest it will be ported back to the base PS5; this is because of a lack of dedicated hardware to manage AI upscaling. As such, we may even expect to see PSSR frame-gen reserved for the PS6, which is currently slated for around 2027 or 2028.

Mark Cerny says Sony is “intimately familiar” with FSR Frame Generation due to the technology being “co-developed between SIE (Sony Interactive Entertainment) and AMD”. He adds that “no more releases” are planned for this year, which plants some doubt surrounding whether PSSR frame-gen will be ready for the PS5 (Pro) generation.
