Microsoft’s Abysmal Communication About The Windows 11 26H1 Release

Someone Should Give Them A Hand With Their ARM Announcements

Yesterday Microsoft delivered a short notification to those that subscribe to their Message Centre that was incredibly short on details but certain to cause a large reaction.  It stated that Windows 11 26H1 would only be available for “select new devices only and is not offered as an in‑place update”.  This was guaranteed to upset sysadmins who are still dealing with the fact Microsoft now has a greatly compressed EoL schedule for Windows 11, with several versions of Windows 11 already dead and no longer receiving updates.

The good news is that Microsoft is only guilty of lousy communications this time, and isn’t planning a second great obsolescence; the first being the requirement of TPM 2.0 hardware in devices.  Windows 11 26H1 is specifically for the next generation of systems powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 Series of processors, and likely other ARM based systems as they are released.  It is totally separate from the x86-64 processors that most of us use.

It took a while for Microsoft to provide these details, thankfully Bleeping Computer and other sites were able to confirm just what the smeg Microsoft was talking about.  Here’s hoping you don’t have to deal with the second coming of the Surface Pro X, and can just ignore Windows 11 26H1 completely!
