CD Projekt RED has been testing out AI tools to create “realistic” NPCs in The Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2
CD Projekt RED has released its latest Management Board Report, a 154-page document detailing what the company worked on through 2025. As you’d expect, there are some interesting nuggets of information related to the development of upcoming The Witcher 4 and the currently unnamed ‘Cyberpunk 2’ project (previously codenamed Orion).
The topic of generative AI in games remains a controversial one, but that doesn’t stop developers from using AI tools during a game’s development. The report reveals that CD Projekt RED has a team responsible for AI research, and it has been testing out “AI-based tools” for automating prototyping, testing, and generating “realistic crowds” of NPCs.
The document reveals research focused on applying new technologies, as well as improvements to existing games such as Cyberpunk 2077 and its Ultimate Edition. Other titles referenced include The Witcher 4, Cyberpunk 2, and Project Sirius (an online multiplayer game set in The Witcher universe).

In 2025 the team responsible for Artificial Intelligence research continued investigating opportunities for employing existing AI-based tools or developing custom tools to support creation of future products – particularly in the scope of automating prototyping, testing and generating realistic crowds of non-player characters (NPCs).
Some of the ongoing initiatives progressed to testing and preliminary utilization. In parallel, the team performed a review and consolidation of research projects, which resulted in new initiatives focusing on the most promising directions of work. The AI team is currently pursuing approximately a dozen research projects.

On the topic of generative AI in games, Capcom recently came out to say it won’t be using AI for game content, but will indeed be using the technology during development. It makes sense for a company with plenty of massive IPs, and with all eyes on CD Projekt RED ahead of The Witcher 4, it makes sense for the Polish devs to follow a similar philosophy.
The Witcher 4 is set to be CD Projekt RED’s next major release, but it won’t be coming in 2026. Current predictions place the release in 2027 or later. Even still, we’ve had a bunch of confirmed information about the game’s technologies, including support for Nvidia’s DLSS 4 (and possibly DLSS 5, which comes out this Fall), as well as RTX Mega Geometry.
