Intel and AMD CPU market share on Steam seems to be settling on a 60/40 split
For the last couple of years, AMD processors have been our best gaming CPUs of choice, across a number of price points, and this is being reflected in consumer data. According to the latest Steam Hardware Survey for August 2025, Intel currently holds about 59.76% of CPU usage among Steam users, while AMD commands around 40.16 % – a near‑historic high for AMD and Intel’s lowest recorded share in Steam’s 17‑year survey history (besides last month that is, when it was briefly even lower at 59.5%). This means that, in the gaming segment of the CPU market at least, the two companies have a near 60/40 split.
While Intel continues to lead in overall PC, mobile, and server markets, AMD’s resurgence – especially across high-performance and value-driven segments – has meaningfully reshaped the CPU landscape. If trends persist, AMD may further narrow the gap across multiple sectors, though Intel appears likely to retain leadership for the foreseeable future.
Beyond Gaming: Desktop, Mobile & Server Markets
In the desktop PC market, AMD achieved a unit share of 32.2 % in Q2 2025, with Intel at the 67.8 % mark. In other words, about a 2:1 ratio in Intel’s favour; however, this is part of a long downward trend for Intel, given as recently as 2018 they held a dominant 9:1 ratio position. AMD’s estimated revenue share was higher than there market share as well, at around 39.3 %, thanks largely to strong sales of premium Ryzen 9000 series chips.
On mobile (laptop) CPUs, AMD holds a smaller piece of the pie: around a 20.6 % unit share in Q2 2025, though its revenue share was around 21.5 %.

For server CPUs, AMD’s gains are notable once again. As at June 2025, AMD holds about 33 % of the server CPU market – a sizeable increase from as recently as 2017 when they held (wait for it) almost zero share of the market. Intel does obviously still command the majority at around 62 %.
