Neewer Q120 Review: Compact 120Ws TTL Flash for Portrait Photographers
A Pocket-Sized Flash with Big Ambitions
Over the past couple of years, Neewer has quietly built a lighting ecosystem that has become genuinely impressive. I’ve used everything from their Q6 battery strobes through to the Z3 speedlight, and one thing that consistently surprises me is just how much value Neewer manages to pack into its products.
The new Neewer Q120 sits somewhere between a traditional speedlight and a larger battery-powered monolight. Offering 120Ws of power in a remarkably compact body, it promises studio-style lighting without the bulk.
So, is it worth adding to your kit?
First Impressions
The first thing that struck me about the Q120 was its size.
If you’ve ever carried a larger battery strobe around on location, you’ll appreciate how small this thing is. At around 670g including the battery, it’s easy to slip into a camera bag and light enough to carry all day without feeling weighed down. Despite its compact size, it doesn’t feel cheap. The body feels solid, the controls are straightforward, and it integrates nicely into Neewer’s growing Q wireless ecosystem.
For photographers already using Neewer flashes, setup is virtually seamless.
What’s in the Box?
Neewer includes everything you need to get started straight away. Inside the box you’ll find the Q120 flash unit itself, a rechargeable lithium battery, USB-C charging cable, flash stand, protective carry pouch, a diffuser dome and a user manual. The standard package provides the essentials needed to get the flash mounted, charged, and firing straight out of the box. I always appreciate when manufacturers include a carry pouch, as it helps protect the light when it’s bouncing around in a the car, alongside bags full of lenses, triggers, and other gear.
The entire package is surprisingly compact. The Q120 takes up very little room in the bag, making it an easy addition to my location lighting kit without significantly increasing weight or bulk.

Power: More Than a Speedlight
At 120Ws, the Q120 sits comfortably above most traditional speedlights.
For portrait photographers, that extra power gives you more flexibility when working with softboxes, umbrellas, or trying to compete with daylight outdoors.
No, it’s not going to replace a 400Ws or 600Ws strobe if you’re shooting large groups or overpowering the midday sun, but that’s not really its job.
Instead, the Q120 fills a gap that many photographers have been asking for:
“Can I have something more powerful than a speedlight without carrying a brick?”
The answer is yes.
High-Speed Sync for Outdoor Portraits
One of the biggest advantages of the Q120 is its support for High-Speed Sync up to 1/8000 second.
For portrait photographers, this means you can continue shooting wide open at f/1.4 or f/1.8 outdoors without blowing out the background.
This is exactly the type of feature that makes creative outdoor portraits much easier. Instead of stopping down your lens to control exposure, you can maintain that beautiful shallow depth of field while still adding flash.
Battery Performance
Battery life is impressive for a light this size.
Neewer claims around 410 full-power flashes from a single charge, which should comfortably get most photographers through a portrait session or workshop without needing a spare battery.
Recycle times are quick too, ranging from almost instantaneous at lower power settings through to around 1.5 seconds at full power.
For portrait work, fashion shoots, cosplay sessions, and creative workshops, that performance is more than adequate.
Wireless Integration
This is where the Q120 becomes particularly interesting.
If you’re already invested in the Neewer ecosystem, the Q120 works with the QZ and QPro triggers and can be mixed with other Q-series flashes including the Z1, Z2, Z2 Pro, Z3 and larger Q strobes.
Even more interesting is its compatibility with the Godox X system via receiver mode, giving photographers additional flexibility if they’re already running a mixed lighting setup. (This needs to be switched on in the Menu)
For many photographers, this means you don’t need to completely replace your existing lighting system.
Real-World Use
I see the Q120 appealing to several different types of photographers:
Portrait Photographers

Workshop Hosts
Its lightweight design makes it easy to transport and set up quickly, especially when you’re moving between multiple locations.
Content Creators
The compact size means it travels well and takes up very little room in your kit.
Event Photographers
As an off-camera flash solution, the Q120 provides considerably more punch than a traditional speedlight while remaining portable.
STILL LIFE/PRODUCT Photographers
Brilliant for still life or product photography, needs to be used in conjunction with a reflector or even a second flash.
Things to Consider
While the Q120 offers plenty of advantages, it won’t be the right choice for everyone.
If you regularly shoot large groups, commercial sets, or need to overpower bright midday sunlight with large modifiers, you’ll still benefit from stepping up to something like the Neewer Q4 or Q6.
The built-in modelling light is useful for previewing shadows and highlights, but at 3W it isn’t designed to function as a serious continuous light source.
This is a flash first and foremost. However, it is not by any means an on-camera flash, off-camera only.
