Gemini suddenly can’t make calls on Android and Android Auto

The transition to Gemini on Android Auto has been a bit rough for a number of reasons, but a current bug has left some users unable to make calls due to a strange error, and it’s not just an issue behind the wheel.

Update 6/16: Speaking to 9to5Google, Google says this issue has now been fixed. Users still affected can check for app updates via the Google Play Store.

We are aware of an issue preventing some users from making calls with Gemini on Android Auto and mobile devices. A fix is now available, and users can resolve this by updating their app to the latest version in the Google Play Store.

Our original coverage follows:

Confirmed by quite a few Android Auto users on separate Reddit threads this week, Gemini is failing to make calls via voice commands in the car. It also seems to be affected Gemini’s ability to place calls on Android itself.

An error message saying “Something went wrong. Please try again” shows up on the phone as pictured below.

Seeing as this isn’t an Android Auto-only issue, it’s hard to say what exactly is the root cause of the problem, but it’s probably rooted in a Gemini or Google app update.

Several affected users say switching back to Google Assistant seems to fix the problem, but that’s definitely a short-term fix.

We’ll update this post as more details become available.

Notably, this comes as we’ve also noticed in recent days that Android Auto has been intermittently showing the Assistant icon again instead of Gemini, despite using Gemini for the response. It’s at random and hard to repeat, but we’ve seen it a few times in the past few days. Let us know in the comments below if you’re seeing this visual bug.
